Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second most populous city of the United Arab Emirates, and also capital of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the UAE's 7 emirates. Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. The city proper had a population of 1.5 million in 2014.The city features large gardens and parks, high-rise buildings, green boulevards lining all the streets and roads, international luxury hotel chains and shopping malls.
Abu Dhabi downtown is the area immediately east of Sheikh Rashid Street and where you’ll find the city’s liveliest street life and densest concentration of cafés and shops. The parallel Hamdan Street and Sheikh Zayed the First Street are the two major thoroughfares, each lined with identikit office blocks stacked tightly together like Lego bricks.
Just south of the latter lies the Madinat Zayed Gold Centre, Abu Dhabi’s low-key, with two floors of shops selling traditional and contemporary jewellery.
